A Little About Me

My name is Leah. I’m a stay at home/ work at home mom. I have been married to my wonderful husband Will since 2007. Will is an RN in our local hospital’s dialysis unit. I run this website as well as a small preschool program out of our home. We have 3 children.

We also have 2 cats and a dog. Molly and Luna are our cats. They are little rascals, but they love cuddling with each other and the kids. Odin is our Yellow Lab. No, he isn’t a Diabetes Alert Dog, he’s just a lovely furry family member. It’s a busy household, to say the least.

A Little About Carb Counting Mama

Let me tell you why I started the Carb Counting Mama website. A few weeks after Miss Cameron was born, Jordan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Cameron was 7 weeks old, Jordan was a few months shy of his third birthday, and my husband was in the midst of his Nursing Program final exams. It was a LOT.

It was a very difficult transition. But we’ve been at this for a long time now and I’d like to show you that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

It’s my personal belief that the majority of T1D is something we can figure out. There are various management styles that can result in mostly straight, in range, blood sugar numbers.
We don’t always have those kinds of numbers for my son, but we’re learning new things all the time.
If T1D was actually impossible to figure out, things like low carb, Sugar Surfing, and DIY closed looping wouldn’t work. I believe that we can learn from our numbers and from each other and make more educated decisions moving forward. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s learning from our experiences and doing better next time.

I want to share our stories with other parents who are struggling with T1D. I want you to know you’re not alone. My goal with this site is to educate where I can, talk about all things T1D, and lift up and inspire other parents with T1D children.

So please, explore this website. Find something that interests you. I hope I can brighten up your day, help you out, or give you a bit of a boost in some way.
