I had this post all planned out. I was going to do a mock “interview” with Jordan before and after diabetes camp, showing his expectations compared to what actually happened with his first d-camp experience. But, halfway through the “after” interview, I remembered: I have a 7 year old boy, this won’t work.
If you have a child around this age, you know what I’m talking about. They give one word answers to every question you ask.
“Yes”, “no”, and “I don’t remember” are common answers in our house right now.
So, I’ll tell you about picking him up from diabetes camp.
Diabetes Camp in a Word
I’ve never seen him smile so fully as he did when we picked him up. He had a wonderful time and was excited to see us.
As we waited in line with him to sign him out with our secret code word (he picked “birthday” because camp started the day after his birthday), one of the doctors came up to talk to us.
“We’ve been arguing over who gets to take Jordan home with us,” the doctor told me with a smile, “we all loved having him at camp!” And he turned to Jordan and asked him to promise he would return for camp again next summer.
Jordan excitedly agreed.
He gave his counselors high fives and hugs goodbye and off we went.
The interrogation began:
Me: “Did you make any friends?”
Him: “Yup” … see what I mean?
Me: “What did you do?”
Him: “Kayaking” … seriously.
Me: “What kinds of foods did you eat?”
Him: “Pancakes and waffles” … holy smokes! I got 3 whole words out of him! Quick, take a picture, we must remember this day!
The car ride went on like this until he passed out in the back seat (probably from the thrilling conversation).
The Talent Show
Later, as I was unpacking his *extremely smelly* suitcase, I found an envelope.
In it was a sheet of his bg numbers during camp, some information sheets, and a letter with personalized notes from the doctors and nurse.
I read the notes out loud to Jordan and the family. One of the doctors mentioned how “surprisingly strong” Jordan was. I stopped and asked him what that meant.
“Oh, I lifted a 12 year old,” he explained.
His Grandma and I burst out laughing. That was not the answer we were expecting.
The next note mentioned Jordan’s “amazing performance” in the talent show.
“What did you do in the talent show?” his Grandma asked.
“I told you, I lifted a 12 year old.”
Should he go back to Diabetes Camp?
He has since told a story or two about his friends and his experiences at D-camp.
And whenever he is asked if he wants to go back next summer?
In a word, “YES!”
